89 pts. The Black Island Dalmatian Dog Pošip is a special original wine from the island of Korčula, the very birthplace of this beloved indigenous varietal. Pošip is the true Dalmatian white grape variety, originally discovered by a local farmer 150 years ago in the very village Smokvica, where the winery is located. Black Island carefully selects its grapes from 25 local family farmers who have been growing grapes for generations. There are a total of 200 vineyards in Smokvica, between 40 and 160 meters above sea level. Vines are at least 15 years old and the selected grapes come from three different soil types (red soil, sand and rocky) to achieve the right balance.

Pošip is a delicate variety that requires grapes to be picked early in the morning. The handpicked grapes are cooled and undergo selection in the cellar. They are crushed with minimum pressure. Fermentation takes place during 3-4 weeks under strict temperature control at 15°C, which is followed by 2 months of stirring the fine lees. The year 2021 had a hot summer with periodic rain.
The Dalmatian Dog Pošip is an aromatic white wine with the traditional characteristics of citrus fruits, stone fruits and Mediterranean herbs. This wine is a great way to get to know this Dalmatian white wine favorite. It offers complexity
with lingering minerality. Best served at 12-14°C.
Just off the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, in the center of the island of Korčula, the freshwater ponds that feed the vineyards of the village of Smokvica are a remarkable gift of nature. Locals call this place “Merga Victa,” meaning “path for water” in old Dalmatian.
It was here that in 1880, a farmer named Marin Tomašić spotted a wild grapevine growing in the forest. He was immediately drawn to its fruity aroma and exquisite intense flavor, and decided to plant the grapes in his own vineyard. Aware that he had stumbled across an exceptional gift of nature, Tomašić generously shared the secret with his friends and neighbors. In 1967, Pošip became the first white wine variety in Croatia with a protected geographic label. The only true Pošip is a Pošip from Korčula.
